About Me

I am Maya Kaqchikel and Q’eqchi from Iximulew (Guatemala).

My work focuses on recognizing the importance of Indigenous knowledge systems and languages as essential to the health and wellbeing of Indigenous communities. My scholarship, community work, and advocacy center Indigenous people, knowledge, language, healing and joy.

I am an orator, interpreter, advocate, and learner - working to elevate and create initiatives that reconcile and heal the harmful history and practice of healthcare delivery and health education in Maya communities both in Guatemala and in the diaspora.

Currently: I am a PhD student in the Department of Native American Studies at the University of California, Davis. I hold an M.A. in Native American Studies from UC Davis, an M.P.H. in Global Health from the University of Washington, and a B.S. in Biology from Whitworth University.
